Shelba Jean Bates McMellon

Shelba Jean Bates McMellon, age 78, of Mena, Arkansas, died, Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab in Mena. She was born on Sunday, September 29, 1940 to Walter LaFayette and Cora Nellie Standridge Bates in Big Fork, Arkansas.

Shell was a person that lived, loved and laughed and always was genuine person that knew who she was and said what was on her mind. She loved her family; her children and her grandchildren with all her heart. Shell enjoyed reading and writing poetry, letters to friends and family and sending cards to special people in her life. Shell, with her husband, Jerry owned and operated McMellon Ready Mix in the early 80's. Shell was a Christian and attended Dallas Avenue Baptist Church and The Crossing. Shell was a loving, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Jerry McMellon; one brother, Lake Bates and two sisters, Georgia Holman and Ruby Edwards.

Shell is survived by her two sons and daughters in law, Tim and Melinda McMellon of Mena and Steve and Debbie McMellon of Mena; her daughter and son in law, Susan and Victor Rowell of Mena; three sisters, Edna King of Eugene, Oregon, Alice Keener of Mena and Connie Bates of Mena; eleven grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at The Crossing with Brother Roy Conatser and Victor Rowell officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 18, 2018 from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home Chapel in Mena, Arkansas.

Pallbearers will be Chris McMellon, Terry Keener, Terry McMellon, Rob McMellon, Dennis Ferguson, Dennis Standridge, Jordan Wells and Mark Brown. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jr McMellon, Larry McMellon, and Jimmy McMellon.
