After working in the private sector, Paul began working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1968 and was based in Sikeston, MO. With the Corps he found himself working on several major projects through the years, most notably being the H.G. Huxtable plant, which was the largest flood water pumping plant in the world at that time. He was also afforded the opportunity to advance in his field and moved several times throughout the years. He loved his work and being outdoors and always embraced the transitions to his next assignment and town, in which he would immerse himself in the community.
He eventually landed in Greenwood, Mississippi where he would finish out his years with the Corps. He joined the Presbyterian Church where he met the love of his life, Susan Sarah Fischer. They married on Valentine's day in 1987 and have spent 32 loving years together. Paul retired from the Corps in 1993. Looking for something to fill his time, as well as being proficient in most things constructional, he and his sister-in-law Nancy started a successful company called Homework Inc., in which they worked together several years. Paul and Susan decided to look for a location to retire. While visiting Mena, AR, Paul discovered that his grandfather had lived and worked in construction, building homes in Mena in the early 1900s. They fell in love with the mountains and the community. Paul soon set to the task of building their log home "on the mountain," as he liked to say. They completed and moved into their new home in 2000 and Paul once again embraced his new community. A new construction handyman company was soon established by Paul and was again successful.
Paul was a member of several country clubs where he loved to play golf, tennis and socialize. He was also a past president of the Jaycees of Sikeston MO as well as, past president of the Rotary Club of Greenwood, MS and Mena, AR. Paul was also involved with the Chamber of Commerce. He participated in community theatre, as well as BBQ cookouts and contests. He loved to cook, BBQ, read, do crossword puzzles, and spend time with his family. Paul is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mena. Paul was preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister.
He is survived by his beloved wife Susan, one son Col. Paul Henry Slinkerd III (Elke), two daughters Terri L. Jenkins (Clark), Tonya L. Schultz (Adam) , stepson Mike Hurley, brother-in-law Mike Fischer (Jennifer), sister-in-law Nancy Huff (Jim), nieces, Tricia Luck, Laura Treadway (Keith), Sarah Hinton (Cody), Anne Quinlan (Sean), nephews, Cody Standifer, Paul Woolson (Jenn), Randy Woolson (Belinda), one grandson Drew Wishon, two granddaughters Courtney Slinkerd, Laynie McWilliams (Justin) and two great grandchildren and numerous great nephews and nieces.
